Fenton — The Fenton varsity wrestling team remains atop of the hill in the Flint Metro League’s Stripes Division standings after Wednesday night’s league matches.

The Tigers hosted Holly and defeated the Bronchos 35-30. Fenton also defeated Owosso 45-24 in a crossover match while Holly defeated Brandon 42-33.

The big match was the battle between the two rivals, Fenton and Holly. The final three matches near the end of the contest dictated the victor. At 152, Fenton’s Dylan Beverly found himself in a tight match with Holly’s Hunter Hummel. Beverly led most of the match but had to hold on down the stretch to earn a tight 11-9 decision win. That cut Holly’s lead to 27-17 in the team score.

The next match was probably the most anticipated match of the night when Holly’s two-time state champion Jacob Gonzales took on Fenton’s state-ranked Philip Lamka. It was a tight defensive match with neither wrestler ever really gaining a dominant edge to earn near-fall points, but Gonzales was able to control the match for the most part and earn the 4-0 decision victory. However, Lamka keeping it a tight decision verdict was important. Fenton trailed just 30-17 and earned forfeit wins from Kyle Dunfield (171) and Jaden Harper (189) to close the Holly gap to 30-29.

That meant the final match of the dual was going to determine the winner, and Fenton’s Evan Firby was able to earn the pinfall win against Jason VanSickle II in 59 seconds.

The Tigers earned the first two victories on the mat. Carson Krzeszak (285) pinned Holly’s Gary Wall in 2:51 in the first bout and after a double forfeit at 103, Fenton’s Jamal Horne won a 10-6 decision against Holly’s Gabe Soja.

Holly had Christian Preston (119) earn a 6-5 decision against Fenton’s Owen Freeman but then Fenton’s Garrett Clark (125) earned a technical fall win versus Andrew Cross. Holly won matches with Chase Couchman (135), Konner Welch (140) and Jacob DeVary (145) earning forfeit wins. Holly’s Anthony Ayotte (130) won when he pinned Fenton’s Blake Gerow in 1:50.
