While a great amount of the focus this Saturday in the tri-county area will be on the Division 2 Girls State Swimming and Diving Championship, there certainly will be some focus on the D3 event at Lake Orion High School on Friday and Saturday as well.
That’s because the Powers Catholic varsity girls swim team will have two tri-county swimmers at the event — Lara Wujciak and Lauren Taylor.
Wujciak will conclude her prep swimming career with a great chance of finishing her career with an individual event state championship. Wujciak is the top seed by better than two
seconds on the rest of the field in the 100 yard butterfly (56.59). A year ago, Wujciak finished fifth in the event. She also is the fifth seed in the 100 backstroke (59.27).
Taylor, a junior, also will be competing in two individual events. She’ll be competing in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. The Powers squad also has all three of its relay teams qualified, and the pair will likely compete on two relays as well. The Powers’ 200 medley relay team is seeded third (1:51.86) entering the meet.
The event will be different than typical seasons. The meet will just have one swim in each event for each individual or relay team.
“I am a big fan of the timed finals situation at states,” Wujciak said. “It is a ‘last one fast one’ situation. A mental test to all swimmers to see if their head is really in the game.”
