The Lake Fenton varsity baseball team got some strong pitching in its district semifinal contest versus Goodrich on Saturday.
The defense struggled, however. Goodrich used errors in both innings the Martians scored in to capture a 5-2 victory against the Blue Devils.
An error started Goodrich’s threat in the bottom of the third. It was followed by three consecutive singles. Goodrich led 1-0. The lead grew to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly (what could’ve been the third out) and the final run scored on a throwing error. Goodrich led 3-0.
An error with one out started Goodrich’s two-run threat in the fourth inning. It was followed up by a single and a sacrifice fly, making it 4-0. The other run scored on a wild pitch.
Lake Fenton scored single runs in the top of the fourth and sixth innings. The fourth inning started with a double by Zach Hempsall.
Clay Cook walked and Hempsall eventually scored. Lake Fenton trailed 3-1 at the time.
In the sixth inning, Cook walked and eventually scored going to second on a wild pitch, stealing third and scoring on a throwing error on the steal attempt.
Hempsall led the offense with two of Lake Fenton’s four hits. The Blue Devils did walk seven times.
Cameron Wright pitched well in defeat, tossing a six-hitter and walking none. He struck out four.
