Simply stated, the Holly varsity football team needs to find a consistent offense if the squad wants to post a few more wins during the 2021 season.
The Bronchos scored 23 points in a 23-0 victory against Auburn Hills Avondale during week two. However, the offense, which scored just seven points in its opener at Fraser, scored just six at Swartz Creek, resulting in a 28-6 loss to the Dragons.
The Bronchos trailed 14-0 at the half and trailed 28-0 after the Dragons scored their final TD with 8:06 left on an 18-yard run by Tristan Hinkley. After the final Dragons’ TD, the Bronchos set up their only scoring drive. The drive actually ended and the Bronchos were punting. However, a fumbled punt reception and recovery by Holly’s Ashton Dehart gave the Bronchos the ball back. A few plays later, Dehart threw a 33-yard TD pass to Jacob Chereson in the endzone. The Bronchos missed the extra-point and trailed 28-6.
Holly attempted an onside kick and recovered the ball. A few plays later, the Bronchos had a 35-yard completion to Chereson, setting Holly up at the Creek 8. However, a penalty on first down erased a potential TD and then an interception ended the drive.
It was a game of turnovers by both teams. The Dragons fumbled the ball away on their first possession and it was recovered by Dehart. However, the Bronchos returned the favor on their possession. Creek looked poised to score the first TD of the game with the ball at the Holly 4. However, Dawson Stebbins fumbled and Holly’s Chereson recovered. It only held off the eventual Creek score. Holly had to punt and Creek too over at the Holly 36. A few plays later Hinkley scored on a 23-yard run. The Dragons led 7-0.
Holly threw an interception on its next possession and Swartz Creek promptly scored with a six-yard TD pass. The Dragons led 14-0 at the half.
Creek scored two second-half TDs on runs by Hinkley. The first was a four-yard run and the second an 18-yard scamper.
Holly (1-2) travels to Linden (1-2) for a tri-county Flint Metro League Stripes Division contest on Friday.
