Goodrich — The Linden varsity boys track team came painfully close to clipping their area rivals, Fenton, out of the second-place spot at the FML track meet on Wednesday.

If the Eagles did, the Tigers would’ve left without a co-league crown. However, the Eagles had to settle for third (96 points) at the meet held at Goodrich, while the Holly boys placed fourth (67) and the Holly girls took sixth (12) in Stripes division activity.

Both boys squads earned their share of event championships. Holly won five while Linden earned four.

Holly’s Jaden Simmons was on the elite athletes at the meet, earning a first in the 100 (10.81) and the 200 (22.56). He also helped the 800 relay team of Noah Cycholl, Jake DeVray, Marcus Mitchell and himself to a first-place finish (1:31.87).

Other firsts were earned by Mitchell in the 110 hurdles (16.66) and Wilson Tschirhart in the pole vault (13-feet-0).

Linden’s Kyle Eberhard had an outstanding meet, taking firsts in four events — the 400 (51.12), the 800 (2:00.46), the 1,600 (4:27.61) and the 3,200 (9:53.49).

Who followed Eberhard in second place in each of those events? Why it was teammate River Mecksroth who posted times of 53.06 in the 400, 2:01.87 in the 800, 4:28.20 in the 1,600 and 5:55.49 in the 3,200. The only other individual top-four effort by a Linden male athlete was Hayden Bradfield placing third in the 800 (2:04.52).

Holly’s men had another relay place second. the 400 relay of Cycholl, DeVray, Mitchell and Simmons earned it in 44.03.

The Holly girls saw Annabelle Basham place third in the high jump (4-1) and fourth in the pole vault (7-0).
