The Holly varsity wrestling team had a stellar day during its duals against Goodrich and Kearsley Wednesday night.
The Bronchos defeated Goodrich 43-22 and Kearsley 42-32.
Lake Fenton also competed at the same four-team event held at Kearsley, losing to Goodrich 36-24 and lost to Kearsley 50-30.
The Bronchos have had a few major battles with the Martians in recent years. Holly lost to Goodrich in the regional round a year ago, but avenged the loss this time.
Mason Forsythe (135) and Gabe Soja (103) earned pinfall wins while Nate Young (145) earned a major decision win against Goodrich. Ryan Sernick (140), Jeff Preston (152), Scott Herrmann (171), Kolten Steele (215) and Brian James (125) alo earned decision wins. Finally, Jacob Gonzales and Tyler Jackson earned forfeit wins.
Against Kearsley, James and Jacob DeVary earned Holly pinfalls while Young posted a technical fall victory.
Soja, James, Forsythe, Young, Gonzales and Preston finished the night with 2-0 records.
We had an awesome night,” Holly varsity wrestling coach ZacharyWood said “We work very hard and our wrestlers are starting to trust that. If we trust our training and strive to live a good honest life, good things will happen. We are excited and prepared for the postseason.”
The Blue Devils had their stronger effort against Goodrich. Jack Conley (135), John Grigg (145) and Zolen Marron (215) each won by pinfalls while Ty Johnson (112) won by major decision. Jacob McBride (152) and Joseph Garner (103) earned decision wins while Ethan McCrate (285) earned a forfeit win.
“We had a couple of kids out of the lineup this week,” Lake Fenton varsity wrestling coach Vance Corcoran said. “I hope to have them back this weekend or next week.”
Holly had the four voids, but still cruised to victory in its two matches. Young (140) did what he could, earning two wins — a pinfall and a technical fall. Plenty of other Holly wrestlers had 2-0 days. That list included two-pinfall winners Mason Forsythe (145) and Jacob Gonzales (152). The other Holly wrestlers to go 2-0 were Gabe Soja (103), Ryan Sernick (130), Jeff Preston (160), and Kolten Steele (189).
The closest match of the night was Lake Fenton’s battle with Brandon. Lake Fenton got pinfall wins by Aaron Campbell (160), Ty Johnson (112), Jaden Ketchum (119) and Jack Conley (125) to help spark the win. Zolen Marron (215), Joseph Garner (103) and John Grigg (145) also earned wins.
Johnson, Ketchum, Conley, and Marron finished with 2-0 marks during the meet.
