It’s been a tough start for the Fenton varsity wrestling team during the early portion of season.
But that changed on Wednesday as the Tigers captured two dual victories, including winning its first against Flint Metro League Stripes Division foes.
The Tigers defeated Swartz Creek 48-30 and Brandon 48-33. The victory against Swartz Creek marked the first match for the squad against a division opponent.
“We have battled and have had a lot of individual success,” Fenton varsity wrestling coach Brad Beverly said. “We’ve had three to four forfeits in every team event and have been close. It was great getting two wins starting off league action. The kids continue to show up and work hard and they were rewarded. I’m proud of these kids. We’ve had some adversity losing some kids who didn’t come out and others to injury and yet they continue give 100 percent everyday. I’m excited to see what some of them can do the rest of the season.”
In the victory against Swartz Creek, all but one of the Tigers’ eight wins were by pinfall. Those earning pinfall wins were Dylan Beverly (152), Philip Lamka(160), Kyle Dunfield (171), Ben Triola (189), Carson Krzeszak (285) and Owen Freeman (119). Garrett Clark (125) also won by forfeit.
The Brandon match had three Tigers earn pinfall wins. They were Beverly, Krzeszak and Freeman (125). Lamka, Dunfield, Triola, Jamal Horne) and Clark (130) also earned forfeit wins.
Fenton returns to Metro action Wednesday when they host Holly and Owosso.
