Saturday’s Kayla O’Mara Invitational held at Goodrich Middle School could end up being a pretty good preview of the first Metro League Stripes Division jamboree for this Saturday.
It looks like there could be a Fenton-Linden battle in both the boys and girls race on Saturday. The Fenton varsity boys won the men’s event at Goodrich with 47 points while the Linden boys placed second with 70 points. In the girls’ event, Grand Ledge won with 35 points but was followed by Linden (82) in second and Fenton (82) in third. The tie was broken based on each team’s sixth-place runner.
Fenton’s boys were the dominant team in the male event, recording their entire top five scorers with-
in the top 19 points. New Lothrop’s Carson Hersch won the 5K race in 16:30.72 but Fenton’s Samuel Cox placed second (17:14.53). Josh Maier (17:38.19) and Michael Crane (17:38.75) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, giving Fenton a strong trio of runners. Aiden Brzezinski placed 11th (17:56.82) and Nathan Katic placed 19th (18:48.72), finishing off the Tigers’ top five scoring runners.
Noah Sage (28th in 19:14.64) and Gavin Thomas (36th in 19:39.40) rounded off Fenton’s top seven runners.
In the women’s race, Linden and Fenton battled it out for second. Melanea Strauss finished eighth (20:48.33), Alexis Mawhinney took ninth (20:52.79) and Alyson Kelly took 14th (21:38.52). Jessica Jablonski (25th in 23:05.71) and Karyn Taylor (26th in 23:12.78) finished off Linden’s top five runners.
