While the prep cross country season may have finished the state meet, many runners didn’t call it quits after that event.
The 2022 MITCA Meet of Champions was hosted on November 12 at Shepherd High School’s cross country course and eight tri-county runners competed in one of the many races held.
The top performer was the tri-county area’s top runner of the 2022 cross country season, Linden’s Kyle Eberhard. Eberhard competed in the Boys Elite Team Race and finished in 16th overall with a time of 15:37.7. His placing among the seniors at the event qualified him for Team Michigan at this weekend’s Mid-East Meet of Champions behind held in Kettering, Ohio.
“The race didn’t go as planned.” Eberhard said. “I got out too hard and fell off really hard. But it’s really awesome to represent Michigan. I’ve been going to the Meet of Champions for three years now, so it’s been a goal of mine to run for Team Michigan.”
Lake Fenton junior Nolan Pinion and Fenton senior Nathan Katic also competed in the boys Elite Team race. Pinion finished 37th in 15:49.7 while Katic was 64th in 16:01.14.
The Linden Eagles had a participant each in the Boys Elite and the Girls Elite open races. Colleen Blackwood posted a 27th-place time in 19:52.4. Meanwhile, Ryan Blackwood placed 39th in the boys’ event in 16:35.
There was an all-comer meet for anyone who wanted to compete and three other tri-county area athletes did just that.
Linden’s Stellah Strauss and Madelynn Strauss compete in the women’s event, with Stellah placing 14th in 21:21. Madelynn placed 21st in 21:45. In the boys’ race, Fenton seventh grader Gavin Katic finished in 81st with a time of 18:09.5. Another runner had local ties. While he attends South Lyon High School, Lake Fenton cross country coach Chris Sobczak’s son Nico Sobczak competed in the Boys All-Comer race, placing 71st in 18:02.5.
