What started out as a defensive game for the Holly varsity girls basketball team against the Swartz Creek Dragons, eventually became a pretty impressive offensive game in the second half.
Holly’s defense held Swartz Creek to just eight first-half points and then the offense erupted for 42 second-half points, leading the Bronchos to a 58-31 Flint Metro League victory Friday night.
Neither team was scoring many points in the first quarter. Rebecca Fugate had four points in the first quarter, helping the Bronchos to a 6-2 lead after eight minutes. The Bronchos heated up a little more in the second quarter with Fugate scoring six points during the second eight-minutes, helping lead Holly to a 16-10 halftime lead. Payton Price ended up scoring Holly’s other six points during the half.
Both teams heated up in the third quarter, but the Bronchos were on complete fire as four different players scored in a 23-point stanza. Fugate hit three treys during the third quarter and scored 13 points during it. Meanwhile, Emma Tooley also hit a trey and had four points while Hunter Weeder chipped in four pints. Price had the other two. Aajah Hendrix tried to keep the Dragons close, scoring eight points of her own, but the Dragons still trailed 39-32 entering the final quarter.
Holly finally distanced themselves from Swartz Creek in the fourth quarter as seven different Bronchos scored. Fugate and Price had four points each while Weeder had three points. Abbey Johnston, Morgan McReynolds, Tooley and Hannah Covert had two points each during the final stanza.
Fugate finished with a game-high 27 points while Price had 12 points. Weeder chipped in seven points. Hendrix led the Dragons with 11 points, all coming in the second half. Cianna Gloster had eight points.
