Fenton vs. Linden soccer

When Division 2 district soccer action begins this week, it looks like there’s great potential for a third Fenton-Linden battle.

In fact, that’s looks like the most probable outcome.

The Linden Eagles are the top-seeded team in the tournament, yet they probably have a tougher road to the finals than the second-seeded Fenton Tigers. The Eagles will have to beat two opponents to make it to the Oct. 17 district title game at Clio’s soccer field while the Tigers will have to beat just one squad.

Linden, winners of their last 12 games, begin tourney action with a road game against tourney hosts Clio on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. The Mustangs gave the Eagles a good battle earlier this season when Linden won a 2-0 contest.

“We have the No. 1 seed but we have a tougher path than Fenton,” Linden varsity soccer coach Kevin Fiebernitz said. “But we know what is in front of us. We know what we’ve got to do and it won’t be an easy road.”

The winner of the Linden-Clio game will host a semifinal contest Oct. 15 at a yet to be determined time against either area rival Lake Fenton or Flint Southwestern. Those two teams play in an opening round game Wednesday at Lake Fenton High School at 4:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Fenton Tigers won’t play until Oct. 15 in the semifinals when they face the winner of Wednesday’s Owosso-Kearsley winner. The  Tigers crushed both opponents.

The championship game will be Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. at Clio’s soccer complex. The Eagles have beat Fenton twice already this season.

“We have to play Clio first, then probably Lake Fenton and our goal is to make it to the Fenton game,” Fiebernitz said. “It’s hard to beat somebody twice in a row, let along three times in a row. (If it happens) it will be an interesting battle.”

The Holly Bronchos are in the Ortonville- Brandon district and begin action Wednesday on the road against St. Clair.. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The winner of that game will play Croswell-Lexington at Brandon High School Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game against either Brandon, Goodrich, Marysville or North Branch Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. at Ortonville Brandon High School.
