Families hoping to enjoy an outing at Silver Lake Park in Fenton this Labor Day weekend won’t be able to take a dip in the water.

According to a notice posted on the city’s website (cityoffenton.org) on Aug. 21, “Water sampling at Silver Lake Beach has tested positive for E.Coli therefore the beach is temporarily closed.  Daily water sampling is being done and the beach will reopen when levels are safe.”

This is one of two Genesee County beaches closed at the start of Labor Day weekend. According to the county health department, Bluebell Beach on Mott Lake in Genesee Township also was closed due to high bacteria levels.

Silver Lake Park Beach has been closed since Aug. 20 after routine tests by the Genesee County Health Department detected the presence of coliform bacteria exceeding state limits for body contact.

Results forwarded to the Michigan DNR show bacteria levels have been falling over the past 10 days on Silver Lake, but they remain well above safe levels.

You wouldn't have this problem if you got rid of the Canadian geese.
