A man in his 50s drowned on Lobdell Lake on Sunday, June 14.
Argentine Township Police Chief Daniel Allen said the call for a person in the water came over at approximately 10 p.m. from the 1600 block of Whitehead Drive. It was initially a rescue call.
The departments of Argentine Township, Linden, and Genesee County Sheriff’s Office responded.
Allen said when the police arrived, the caller stated he had been on the lake with his friend, who was visiting, and they’d been drinking. While the man was going up to his house, he heard a splash and then he couldn’t locate his friend. He then called the police.
The police conducted a search. The man’s body was found a few docks away underneath another boat. Allen clarified that the man had not been struck by the boat.
They haven’t received the toxicology report back yet, but Allen said it’s most likely that alcohol was involved.
“Alcohol and the lake just don’t mix. I understand why they do it. They want to enjoy themselves on the lake, but they have to make sure they do it in moderation. People have got to take responsibility. Being on the water is a whole different animal. Every time we’ve had a drowning, it seems like alcohol was involved,” he said.
The man’s name has not been released.
