Fenton City Council approved an engineering services proposal from Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc., (OHM), the city’s engineering consultants, during its meeting Monday, March 13. The proposal, with a cost of $5,900, involves engineers investigating the structure of the North Road bridge over the Shiawassee River (between Adelaide and N. LeRoy streets) and to submit a funding application to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Local Bridge Program.
In 2022, OHM applied for Local Bridge Funding, however, funding for the project was not approved by MDOT.
Routine bridge inspections performed by OHM indicate the bridge structure of the two corrugated metal tubes has reached the end of its service life. During to current weight restrictions and structure condition, the bridge is now on an annual inspection cycle.
During annual inspection performed by OHM in September 2022, a large void was found under the bridge pedestrian walkway, which required immediate repair by the Department of Public Works (DPW).
Deterioration under the roadway is a concern, where additional study of the metal culver tubes is appropriate to better understand and report to MDOT and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) for future funding opportunities.
