Alyssa Johnson, 15, is a sophomore at Holly High School. She’s the youngest of six siblings. She’s most proud of being nominated to participate in a leadership summit. By the end of the year, she’d like to be dual-enrolled and get her driver’s license.

Which of your school subjects is most useful? Which do you think is useless?

I think writing is the most useful subject. You use it in so many aspects of your life. For example, you need to use proper spelling and grammar when you’re writing a resume or an application for a job or colleges. The subject that I think is useless is history. Most of the time, life won’t require you to be able to recall something that happened 200-plus years ago.

What do you wish your school would teach that is not currently being taught?

I wish that finances and taxes were being taught at my school. So many kids don’t know how to do those, which ends up hurting them in the long run.

What do you think will be this country’s biggest problem 10 years from now?

I think it would be climate change. The weather is changing in reference to storms getting more intense, and natural disasters occurring more frequently.

What are two things you couldn’t live without, and why?

The first thing I couldn’t live without would be my phone. Sadly, a lot of our lives take place on our electronic devices, so we’re constantly on them. The second thing would be sports. I’m a very athletic person and I love to be moving around and playing sports.

Do you think it’s harder to be a teen today than it used to be?

Yes, I think it is way harder to be a teen today. Now, there are so many people who compare themselves or others to famous people. They are constantly putting people down, and this happens more frequently because it could take place in person or on social media.

What type of career possibility excites you?

A career in the criminal justice field excites me. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always been so interested in the way the law works and how law enforcers do their jobs behind the scenes to catch criminals.

What profession do you think will be the most popular when you graduate?

I think a doctor will be the most popular profession in 2021. Many people that I speak with say they are very interested in the health science field, or they know someone who is currently enrolled in medical school to become a doctor.
