People who like to “binge watch” TV series shown on channels such as Netflix and Hulu are encouraged to get up and move around as much as possible.

Sitting for extended periods of time can have adverse health affects.

Binge watching TV shows is a newer fad, something sparked by streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

Experts are saying that binge watching TV could actually kill you, but it’s not for the reason you might think. While some studies may have shown that watching a TV show for an extended amount of time can cause your brain to think differently, the reason binge TV is killing you is actually because of the long periods of sitting you are doing while binge watching. Some have compared binge watching to an addiction.

Sitting for long periods of time is bad, whether you do it for a living at a desk job or you do it at home, binge watching an entire season of The Walking Dead.

Research currently being done at the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences suggests that people who spend most of their days sitting are more likely to be obese, have a heart attack or even die. Even if you exercise regularly, those who spend most of their day sitting are at risk.

There have not been enough studies done and there is not enough information gathered yet to find out how much sitting is bad for you, but it helps to break up your watching by getting up and doing something else standing or walking for a bit occasionally.

For anyone who has binge watched, you know it’s addicting to watch the same show repeatedly. You might feel a connection to the characters. This connection can often alter your mood, too. Have you ever gotten mad when your favorite character died or was hurt? Some people might even feel a little withdrawal when they finish a complete show or at the end of a season that they must wait for the next.

If you feel like your binge watching is affecting your mood, try to break up your watching with a different hobby.

The best times to binge watch? Sometimes it’s good to binge watch, because it gives you something to do and keep your mind off other things. Binge watch when you are stuck at home sick, recovering or snowed in!
