The Lake Fenton Sailing Club may very well be one of the best-kept secrets on Lake Fenton.

With a history on Lake Fenton spanning 54 years, the club’s location on 350 feet of Lake Fenton frontage is ideal for sailors from Flint, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Detroit. Membership in the club entitles a family to full use of club facilities, including a two-story clubhouse, launch ramp and powered hoist, a safe swimming area and play area with sandbox for kids.

“We foster and support sailing and sailboat racing for our members,” said Susan Franzen, club commodore and co-membership chairperson with Mark Hamel. “We try to get everyone sailing at the level they desire.”

Sailboat races take place bi-weekly on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. In July, the Lake Fenton Sailing Club will host a National Regatta, with sailors coming to the club from across the country to race Rebel class sailboats.

“This event will feature three days of exciting racing,” Franzen said. “Many from the club will volunteer to help running the races, launching boats, hosting the guests and preparing food.”

In addition to sailing, members enjoy the social atmosphere of the club with monthly social events in the summer, including a Full Moon Fest (a moonlight sail or come sit by the fire), Sunday Sundaes (ice cream socials) and Holiday Weekend Brunches. A Family Corn Roast is planned for the first weekend in August, and a party for the commodore will be held at the end of the sailing season.

In the off-season, watch for Family Game Nights and a chance to support the Fenton-Linden hockey team by attending games, preceded by dining out before or after the games.

To encourage young sailors, the club also has five Prams sailboats for young members to take sailing. Designed as a first boat, Prams offer stability and a fun experience. “We hold two youth sailing learning events during the summer, so the kids feel comfortable sailing the Prams,” Franzen said.

Now boasting 58 members, the club welcomes anyone with an interest in sailing to join the ranks. As a cooperative, the club keeps its dues low by involving members with club maintenance.
