Rebecca Fugate has been a superstar for the first two seasons of her varsity girls basketball career.

But with each season, she had to share some of the offensive leadership roles with a strong senior.

While she’s still only a junior, there’s no question who teams will be watching out for this winter when Holly comes to town — Fugate. While she’s a known performer, that didn’t keep Fugate from outscoring Lakeland in the team’s 31-20 opening-season victory against Lakeland on Friday. Fugate and the Bronchos also had a strong second game, defeating Lake Orion 39-29 on Monday.

“She’s scoring and getting people into their places and things,” Holly varsity girls basketball coach David Hall said. “She’s scoring but she’s not taking a ton of shots. She’s balancing her baskets from the perimeter to close to the basket. She’s getting assists to kids and finding the open people.”

The Bronchos took control against Lake Orion immediately, taking an 11-0 lead into the second quarter and a 15-3 lead into the half. Lake Orion battled back with a stronger second half, scoring 26 points in the final 16 minutes, but the Bronchos held on to collect the win.

Fugate had a team-high 20 points and was stellar at the free throw line, netting 9-of-10 shots. Freshman Emma Tooley had a strong contest, netting seven points. She scored five of her points during a key stretch in the third quarter when Lake Orion cut the Bronchos’ lead to just four. Senior Taylor vines had six points while Payton Price led the team on the boards with 11.

Sami Hild was the team’s defensive star, limiting Lake Orion’s top offensive player.

In the victory against Lakeland on Friday, Fugate scored a game-high 21 points, or one more than Lakeland’s team had. She also had three steals and two assists.

Holly jumped to a strong 15-3 lead after one quarter and used its defense to assure the victory. Lakeland scored just five first-half points and scored five or less points in three quarters. Lakeland did cut Holly’s lead to just 21-15 entering the fourth quarter, but the Bronchos held Lakeland to just five fourth-quarter points.

Jessica Bradford had four points off the bench while Sami Hild had two points and eight rebounds.

The Bronchos have four returners from a year ago — Fugate, Hild, Taylor Vines and Price.

“It’s a very selfless team. They play for each other,” Hall said. “They don’t care who gets the credit. They just want to win and we talk a lot about that, playing to our strengths and doing what they are good at. The biggest thing we try to get our kids to do is play hard, play with composure. Sometimes we do fall apart a little bit but that happens sometimes. It’s the same message the last 17 years.”

The Bronchos (2-0) begin Metro play with a road contest against the defending Class A state champions and defending Metro League champions, Flushing at 6 p.m.
