While October has just started, the Tri-County Top Seven (let’s admit this is going to be a Top Seven for the fall) is getting exciting.
Some teams are starting to win league titles. That’s going to move them up because it enhances their credentials. And they are credentials the other teams haven’t had an opportunity to earn yet. It will all even out in November when the last poll is completed.
No. 7: Fenton boys tennis - The Tigers were kept from this spot last week by the Linden boys soccer team, but it’s time to put Fenton here. The Tigers are in first place in the Metro League and have a game at home against Lapeer West on Monday to earn the league crown. The Tigers have earned nine shutouts so far this season
Plenty of teams are just on the cusp of making the poll. That list includes Fenton football, Linden football, Linden soccer and Fenton girls swimming. And others like Linden girls cross country and Holly girls cross country will have the opportunity to work their way in the poll by the end of the year with some strong results.
No. 6: Fenton volleyball - The Tigers are one of the victims of teams winning titles discussed earlier on. Fenton hasn’t done anything wrong to drop from No. 4 to No. 6. In fact, they defeated the Clio Mustangs in straight games on Tuesday. The squad will get its opportunity to move up when it gets closer to winning a league title and, possibly, winning a district tourney.
No. 5: Lake Fenton football - Wow, the Lake Fenton football team is on a great roll.
Every week it seems it’s the game Lake Fenton is supposed to get tested. Every week it seems they complete the test with an ‘A+.’
Lake Fenton smacked down Goodrich 34-7 in one of the three games expected to determine the GAC Red title this year. One of the others was Montrose’s 13-12 victory against Goodrich a couple of weeks earlier than the Blue Devils’ big win.
Lake Fenton gets its chance against Montrose in the final week of the regular season. But, wait. The Rams only beat Goodrich by a point. Well, gee, it looks like the Blue Devils are the favorite to win this thing.
No. 4: Linden girls golf - The Eagles lost by a tiebreaker against Fenton and then took second at the Metro meet. They’ll have a good chance to move up next week in regional action.
No. 3: Holly boys tennis - Make that 20 Metro titles in a row. The team has a chance to qualify for state, which will be held at Holly and Fenton High schools.
No. 2: Linden boys cross country - The Eagles have fielded a lot of ‘B’ teams in recent meets. They remain the dominant team in the Metro League.
No. 1: Fenton girls golf - What a week it was for Fenton girls golf. The Tigers won their first Metro title since the 2005-06 school year and beat area rivals and state-ranked Linden two days before in a dual meet.
This team is starting to create quite the resume. They can add to it at regionals this week.
