It has happened!
Not long ago, this was the time of the year fans of baseball cards couldn’t wait to get to the local stores. For a small price you were given a chance to ‘own’ your favorite players through those beautiful pieces of cardboard. But, just as with a lot of other traditions, that magic is virtually gone now.
A few years back when the Detroit Tigers were signing players to ridiculously high-priced and long contacts, they did so thinking if the organization won a World Series it would be worth the issues that would eventually hit the team years later. The Tigers gave it a few good runs. But now I worry the window of opportunity is closing.
The Cuthy Junior Championships are slated to start at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Mt. Holly.
Saturday is one of the most important days of the year when it comes to me displaying my athletic skill, wit and grace.
Without a doubt, it was the most controversial decision in the history of the great game’s history.
Entering Friday night, the Detroit Pistons have won nine of their last 11 games.
It seems it’s the biggest penalty call that became a non-call in National Football League history.
It’s an old bit to argue that January 1 bowl games just don’t have the same feel they had 20 years ago.
Ndamukong Suh has been suspended once in his career for stomping a Green Bay Packers football player. Last week, he saw Lions’ teammate Dominic Raiola get suspended for the same infraction. The Lions are in the playoffs for the first time in three years and everyone knows Suh’s contract is up after this year, meaning he’s in line to get a really nice pay increase from some NFL team. One would think Suh has enough incentive to keep from doing something stupid against the Packers on Sunday.
‘What a great comeback’ — these are words we hear quite often in the sports world.
Starting with this week, Tri-County Times subscribers can get a full dosage of the area’s Friday prep boys and girls basketball games through email. We’ll be sending early Saturday morning our Internet feature called Friday Night Scoreboard, detailing hoops action for Fenton, Lake Fenton, Linden and Holly schools, as we did during the football season. The email will be sent to all Internet subscribers of our publication. And, of course, complete game coverage can still be found at www.tctimes.com.
Generally, it’s really easy to rip on college athletics and argue a great product is being destroyed by the NCAA. However, in the case of the first-ever four-team BCS playoff series, I will give the NCAA some credit. I think they selected the correct four teams. I would’ve rather seen undefeated Florida State as the top seed, followed by Alabama, Oregon and Ohio State, but who really cares what the rankings are as long as the correct four teams made the playoffs? I don’t.
Last weekend was a good one for me in terms of college football. About a week ago, I made a quick comment about how the Southeastern Conference (SEC) was overrated. Conventional wisdom has also suggested the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is an inferior football leauge, meaning Florida State isn’t a worthy No. 1 because of the poor opposition they face in the ACC.
