Dear Editor,

Many experts agree the key to restoring economic prosperity in Michigan depends on keeping college-educated people living here. Recent studies have found that today’s college-educated people want to live in cities that offer alternatives to driving a car. They want effective transportation options like those offered in Chicago, Austin, and Boston.

In fact, effective transportation systems help attract and retain residents and workers of all ages. Michigan roads are among the worst in the nation, and our state’s public transit options are few. Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed a program to fund the state’s urgently needed road and bridge repairs, and improvements to the state’s public transit options. Please ask our state elected officials to focus on increased funding for all transportation forms and to support revenue that local governments receive to help build communities where people want to live.
