Local family mourns as SeaWorld trainer laid to rest


 Dawn Brancheau, the 40-year-old veteran trainer who worked at SeaWorld in Orlando, was laid to rest on Monday in Chicago. She died from injuries she sustained and drowned, when an orca whale pulled her into the training pool by her ponytail last Wednesday.

Matt and Marty Ward of Fenton announce the engagement of their son, Patrick, to Morgan Alyce Thurston. She is the daughter of Larry and Caryn Thurston of Fenton.  He will finish a five-year plumbing apprenticeship in June, and is currently employed by Ecker Mechanical Contractors. The bride-elect is a 2003 graduate of Linden High School and a 2007 graduate of the University of Michigan-Flint.  She is a registered nurse at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc Township.  A spring 2010 wedding is planned.

 Holly — A 19-year-old Mt. Morris man is lodged in the Oakland County Jail after he was apprehended by Holly police officers on Wednesday.

 Fenton — To fix something, sometimes it first needs cleaning. Fenton City Council has approved $3,300 from IISG for cleaning a sodium hydroxide tank at the water plant.

Council asks member to pay $775 in attorney fees

 Holly Village — The Holly Village Council meeting ended with a bang on Tuesday, as President Peter Clemens made a motion to ask Council member William Kuyk to pay for $775 in attorney fees. Clemens’ motion asked Kuyk to compensate village citizens for the money spent in lawyers’ fees to handle an Open Meetings Act (OMA) complaint (see sidebar) filed by Kuyk and another village resident.

 Tyrone Twp. — At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department responded to a domestic violence call in the Tyrone Woods mobile home community. The call quickly escalated to a barricaded gunman situation.

Holly Township presents Marathon Award honors

Supervisor Jesse Lambert (left), of Holly Township, honors William Angus with the new Marathon Award, for 15 or more years of service to the township. Tyrone approves Hartland/Deerfield fire contract

 Tyrone Twp. — The Board of Trustees unanimously voted to approve a contract with the Hartland/Deerfield Fire Authority, pending coverage boundary lines, at its meeting on Tuesday. The effective date of the contract is April 1. Supervisor Andrew Schmidt was absent.

Holly schools face possible $2.5 to 3 million in budget cuts

 Holly — With declining revenue and increasing costs, Holly Area Schools is like many organizations in Michigan — it needs to cut costs. Superintendent Kent Barnes said he will be recommending between $2.5 million and $3 million in reductions to the Board of Education, in order for the school district to be financially solvent.

William and Roberta LeBaron of Fenton have announced the engagement of their daughter, Mary, to Christopher Neihoff, son of Leslie and Diane Neihoff of Auburn Hills.  The bride-elect has an associate’s degree in business management, and is currently working on a bachelor’s degree in Web development.  Her fiancé is employed by Peninsula Plastics, and is working on an associate’s degree in computer programming and a bachelor’s degree in video game design.  A July 2011 wedding is planned.

Task force needs $1,700 to mail questions to Holly residents

 Holly Twp. — The Economic Development Task Force has a survey it would like to mail to 2,000 Holly Township and village residents. The information from the survey will be available to anyone, including the village, township, chamber of commerce, festival planners and Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

Medical marijuana — Township considers ordinance to regulate growing, consumption and distribution

 Fenton Twp. — The Fenton Township Board of Trustees held a public hearing and first reading of a proposed Medical Marijuana Ordinance on Monday. There was no public comment.

No farming or cutting timber in Dearborn Park

   Rose Twp. — The township board has rejected proposals from private parties for farming and cutting timber at Dearborn Park. Township officials are looking at recreation plans for the park, including walking trails, Supervisor Alison Kalcec said.
