What Peter Healey offers at Serenity Recovery Services in Fenton is hope.
Open since July at 1122 North LeRoy St., next to Fenton Home Furnishings, Healey provides substance abuse counseling and education for individuals, groups and families in a private, comfortable setting.
Healy has a licensed master’s degree in social work and is a Certified Advanced Addiction Drug Counselor, but his own personal struggle with alcohol dependence and recovery is his most powerful tool for counseling others.
“I believe in recovery,” said Healey, a native of England who moved to the U.S. to marry his wife, Rebecca, a Michigan native. The couple has three daughters, Katie-Violet, 12, Lilia, 8 and Rosemary, 5. “My understanding of addiction is that it is a disease, which eliminates the shame and gives someone hope that recovery is possible.”
In his practice, Healey uses support and education in exploring a person’s various “triggers” that lead to substance abuse — whether it’s alcohol, heroin or any other chemical dependency. “It’s a family disease,” he added. “Recovery can bring a lot of peace to a person’s family life. It affects everyone.”
He also helps people look forward to recovery, rather than backward with regret. “I’m very solution-oriented,” he said. “I prefer to focus on wellness and help people enhance their quality of life.”
